Amateur Radio (W4DXR)
Welcome to the W4DXR amateur radio shack! I am an active HF operator primarily focused on digital modes (FT8), homebrew antenna construction, emergency preparedness, and station automation.
🚨 Emergency Communications & Preparedness
Amateur radio serves as a vital bridge when commercial power grid and cellular infrastructure fail. Keeping a station ready for emergency deployment requires simple, resilient gear and off-grid power capabilities.
- Off-Grid Power Readiness: Maintaining battery-backed operating setups (LiFePO4 power stations) to ensure uninterrupted operation during severe weather events or local grid outages.
- Digital Mode Efficiency: Utilizing low-power digital modes like FT8 and JS8Call, which can penetrate weak propagation conditions during emergency traffic routing with minimal power consumption.
- Local Preparedness & Monitoring: Keeping local VHF/UHF repeater channels programmed and maintaining auxiliary monitoring gear for regional weather nets and emergency traffic.
🏆 Contesting & DXing
Contesting is one of the best ways to test shack efficiency, antenna performance, and operating skills under heavy band congestion.
- Primary Operating Bands: Active on the 17-meter, 40-meter, and 80-meter HF bands.
- Modes: Heavily focused on FT8 digital operations, maintaining daily contact logs, and tracking band openings across variable propagation conditions.
- Milestones & Logs:
- 474+ Grid Squares Logged
- 78%+ Confirmation Rate via QRZ / Logbook of The World (LoTW)
- 90+ DXCC Countries Confirmed
🛠️ Homebrew Antennas & Wire Projects
There is nothing more satisfying in ham radio than making contacts on an antenna built from scratch out of basic wire and PVC.
- Dipole Construction: Building simple, resonant half-wave wire dipoles cut for specific HF bands (17m, 40m, and 80m).
- Center Insulators & Baluns: Assembling custom center insulators, choke baluns (using ferrite toroids to prevent RF in the shack), and strain-relief rope attachments.
- Tuning & Field Testing: Adjusting element lengths using an antenna analyzer to achieve low SWR matches without needing complex external tuners.
