| === DIY EASTERN PHOEBE NEST SHELVES & PREDATOR BAFFLES === |
|
While traditional cavity nest boxes are great for bluebirds and titmice, Eastern Phoebes require a completely different approach. As bridge-and-ledge nesters, they look for overhead cover with an open front. To support the local Phoebe population around the QTH, I recently batched out a set of custom nesting shelves using standard 1x8 boards, paired with stovepipe baffles to ensure the nests remain secure from climbing predators. The 1x8 Nest Shelf DesignBecause Phoebes prefer to fly directly onto a platform under an overhang, a simple three-sided shelf works perfectly. Materials & Dimensions:
Assembly Notes: I used standard exterior wood glue and 1-5/8" galvanized decking screws. The key is ensuring the roof has enough overhang to keep driving rain off the nest cup, while leaving the front entirely open. Defeating Predators: The Stovepipe BaffleA perfectly built nest shelf is useless if rat snakes or raccoons can easily access it. Mounting the shelves on 1/2-inch EMT conduit or metal poles is the first step, but a stovepipe baffle is mandatory for a true predator-proof setup. Baffle Components:
Installation:
The stovepipe should wobble freely. When a raccoon or snake attempts to climb the pole, they hit the baffle. If they try to grip the 8-inch pipe, its free-floating nature causes them to lose their balance and drop back to the ground. DeploymentShelves should be mounted under existing eaves, on porch pillars, or out-buildings with good overhead protection, keeping them 8 to 12 feet off the ground. With the predator baffles in place and the 1x8 shelves secured, the local Phoebes have a safe, permanent staging ground for the breeding season. |
